Feeding hogs and massaging dogs. And the question on everyone’s lips is, why?

Help The Job-Seeker – She Could Be You

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

If you have a job, everyone you know who doesn’t is looking for your  help. Lend a hand, if you can.

Embrace the Horror; Glimpse the Light

Monday, June 8th, 2009

The jobless rate hit 9.4 percent, a level not seen in a quarter century. But if all you seem to read about is jobs vanishing by the millions. But there are still some jobs out there that job providers are dying to fill.

Economic Roundup in Blue

Monday, May 11th, 2009

The bad news is that the economy shed another 539,000 jobs last month; the good news is that all the punderati were expecting as many as 620,000, so the state was hailed as a sign that things were improving. Before you join the, um, celebration, consider that the White House doesn’t expect the job numbers to turn positive until sometime next year. And keep in mind that a survey of the nation’s largest financial institutions are still about $75 billion short on cash.

Willing to Relocate?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

For anyone who missed it over the weekend, President Obama’s top economic adviser tried to dial back the enthusiasm over a few economic reports that didn’t actually portend the end of financial times, saying that we still had a long way to go before the arrow on the graph turned north. Children of the Jobless

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

I went through several jobless months last year after bailing on the failing newspaper industry, and the toughest part by far was thinking about what it meant to the kids. They didn’t really care that I didn’t have to go to work; they actually seem to be among the tiny minority who like having me around. But it was on me to keep saying “no’’ to the steady demands for sweets and trips and trinkets without letting them feel like we were in a tough spot, and to do it with good humor.

76 Football Stadiums

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Here is a new “what-it-all-means” piece about the current fiscal badness. But if you’re not struggling personally, all of these analyses build up like a callous after awhile, and it’s hard to really feel the full degree of horror in what’s going on. Try thinking of it this way: The number of people who have lost their jobs since this thing began could fill 76 football stadiums.

State of the Union

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

President Obama declined an invitation to this weekend’s Gridiron dinner, becoming the first president since Grover Cleveland to skip the hoity-toitiest of journalism soirees in his inaugural year. Nice example to be following…. In a completed unrelated matter, a new poll of economists sees no evidence that the economy is improving and several states now report unemployment cracking double digits.
