			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Connecting people, improving careers, and hitting it big: <a href="We are putting the finishing touches on a redesign of the Harvard Gazette.   There are two parts to this process: We are creating a robust online Gazette that will serve as our primary vehicle for daily news about Harvard, and we are revamping the print Gazette to complement our new online publication.   The new online Gazette is built on WordPress. In addition to University announcements and a steady flow of stories about scholarship at Harvard and campus events, this new platform will enable us to present more multimedia content, expand our use of photography, share more audio gathered by staff members, and incorporate social sharing tools that will promote the dissemination of news about Harvard.   We are thinking of the online Gazette now as our ``paper of record,’’ and with the addition of a more robust online calendar we expect that it will increase the Gazette’s utility as a resource that helps bind the campus community together.  While it will be live when we publish the first edition of the revamped print Gazette on Sept. 3, we are going to wait a few weeks before officially ``launching’’ so that we have time to bulk up the content and fine tune the site.   The new print Gazette will be published every two weeks during the academic year, and it will look and feel differently from the weekly newspaper that you have come to know. Daily news and announcements will be the staple of our online coverage; the print edition will feature an in-depth cover story and new features focusing on scholarship, campus life, and the faculty and staff who make our University unique.   The publication will be organized by subject area under the categories Science &amp; Health, National &amp; World Affairs, Arts &amp; Culture and Campus &amp; Community. New fixtures in the print Gazette will include a ``Around the Schools’’ feature with items of interest from several schools each issue; ``Harvard Bound,’’ a short feature on a new faculty book that will be linked to an online collection of recent faculty publications; a staff profile called ``On the Job [and Off]’’ that will focus on people in interesting positions around the campus and offer a glimpse of what their life is like away from the office. We could use your help in identifying entries for these new features, particularly the ``Around the Schools’’ and ``Harvard Bound’’ columns.   Some other changes to keep in mind: Because we have changed the format and reduced the size of the print edition, there are several items that used to appear in the Gazette but which now will be teased from the print Gazette but run in full only online. The most obvious example is the Calendar. Others include the police log, Memorial Minutes and lists of fellows. For example, an item in the paper might say that an institute has just named its fellows for the next academic year and, instead of pages of names in tiny type, it will refer readers to the institute’s website. In the case of Memorial Minutes, we have designed a box to run with the former faculty member’s image and a URL guiding the readers to the text of the encomium online.  Attached please find a screen shot of mock up of the new Gazette home page. We expect the transition to continue through the coming semester, and as we try out new ideas we welcome your observations about what’s working and what isn’t.
