Blog Hiatus?

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Why no new entries of late?  Take it for what it’s worth:   we (a) got lazy; (b) decided against blogging; (c) flogged our blogger(s) into departing; (d) none of these; or, (e) eh, a little of this and a little of that.

The answer is mostly “e” – here’s the story:

We didn’t flog anyone but, frankly, the topics (our fault) were kind of stale and off the mark (this presumes we know precisely where the mark lies – and we don’t yet.)  In our context, blogging also seemed so “late to the party” – who reads blogs?  Who reads?

So here’s our “plan” for re-entering the blogosphere next week:  (1) twice per week entries only – that invite and allow for (2) active commenting by our growing community; (3) continuing to tweet blog entries but also creating a more independent and active flow of tweets that are immediately relevant to our audience – or sub-groups within it; and, (4) for those that want it, creating phone-based text communications that focus on, for example, specific work opportunities.

Modern Business Models for Nonprofits

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Let’s be honest; with today’s economy, we take an extra second to think about every cent that we spend and where it’s going. “Is this purchase worth it?”

These “extra” thoughts are the last thing that non-profit organizations need when trying to reach out to donors. Non-profits have had to re-structure their business models to try to gain and catch their donor’s attention. Some of these models include using technology to create personalized letters, funky designed postcards and virtual gaming techniques.

What do you think of these modern business models–do they seem like they’d be successful? Are they all ethical?

Is Receiving a Promotion Always a Good Thing?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

In today’s competitive workforce, it might seem that receiving a promotion is not always what you wanted. Being promoted adds extra pressure on an employee to fulfill deadlines and responsibilities that they might not feel as if they’re ready for.

In most companies, employees would get trained or “coached” for their new position; but that seems to be a way of the past–especially in today’s economy. Don’t stress; Fortune’s column writer, Anne Fisher, provides advice to help you make a smooth transition.

Breaking the Mold

Friday, March 25th, 2011

More than once,  Moreno Valley High School in Angel Fire, New Mexico has been named a top high school.  MVHS’s outstanding music program drew our specific attention – and prompted our first-ever TruCorps donation to a small institution clearly doing work that matters.    Maybe out of the limelight – but not out of sight.  As we learn and grow, we’re looking for ways to support those that do and provide work that matters.   Thanks to MVHS for helping to clarify our vision.

The Highs and Lows of Online Resumes

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

In a world where potential employers no longer have Human Resources look at our resume, it is crucial to understand the “art” of creating a successful online resume. According to a Business Week article, 94% of the top US corporations use online resumes so they can electronically filter through resumes and narrow down who the most qualified applicants are–based on the keywords they use in their resume.

It is important to know what “buzzwords” these employers are looking for, so you can be sure to insert them in your resume (where appropriate) so the electronic filter can pick out your resume, stating that you’re a “qualified applicant.” The best way to discover these keywords are to Google the job description you are applying for and get familiar with what qualities employers are looking for, so your resume can be a “match!”
